Castalia was a naiad, a water nymph, who attracted the attentions of the god Apollo. She is said to have flung herself into the sacred spring at Delphi to escape him, becoming part of the water herself. This painting was inspired by a melding of this myth and depictions of Shakespeare’s tragic Ophelia from Hamlet, who is driven to madness and ultimately drowns.
